The Power of Bamboo

One of the greatest gifts the Earth has given us to go green is a plant that has been used in Asia for thousands of years; bamboo. In the west, bamboo is not used as much as it is in Asia, but that is beginning to change as more and more people discover just how amazing this plant is.

Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world, usually growing about one foot every single day. This means that rather than reach maturity in 30 years like trees in North America, a bamboo stalk can reach maturity within three years. In addition, one bamboo stalk can be harvested many times as each time the stalk is cut; a new stalk will continue to grow.

However, the fast growing ability of bamboo is not the only thing that makes the plant so great. There are several facts about bamboo that most people do not realize which show how versatile the plant is.

1. Bamboo stalks are used in Asia to reinforce concrete because it has the same tensile strength as steel.
2. While bamboo stalks are as strong as steel, fabric made from bamboo is actually as soft as silk.
3. Bamboo towels are much better than cotton towels because bamboo is better for the environment, it does not take as much space to grow and bamboo towels are 1.5 times as absorbent as cotton towels.
4. Bamboo can grow nearly anywhere and where it does grow; it helps to protect the soil from erosion.
5. Bamboo can be made into a variety of environmentally-friendly products including floors, countertops, furniture, clothes, towels, baby clothes, baby products, toys, scaffolding and construction materials.

One of the biggest concerns about bamboo is that people feel that it costs more. This is not true at all. In fact, bamboo is beginning to fall in cost because it is becoming so commonly used throughout the world now. Even Wal-Mart, is beginning to sell bamboo products for a very low price. Many studies have also been done and found that bamboo is going to be one of the biggest exports and imports throughout the world in the 21^st century. Many countries are starting to jump on this and grow their own bamboo. Currently though, China accounts for about 80 percent of all the bamboo exports in the world, and China grows all the bamboo it uses. The United States, Canada, Europe and Australia account for some of the bamboo exports and their hold on the market is beginning to grow.

So, if you are thinking of going green in your home, you can do no wrong by implementing bamboo everywhere you can. The floors are strong, the countertops are beautiful and the fabrics are soft. In addition, if you are thinking of investing in something that will increase in value in the coming years, then you should look at bamboo.

What other plant on Earth is as strong as steel, as soft as silk, waterproof and more absorbent than cotton? Bamboo is the wonder plant of the 21^st century.

The current financial situation worldwide has reached such a point that a number of industries are suffering from severe cutbacks, and experts in a range of areas are finding their job prospects marginalized, if not altogether blocked. This is not a situation that anyone is overjoyed about, but for the individuals who find themselves in such situations, public sympathy is pretty cold comfort. Trying to find a way of improving the situation is something that involves a lot of effort – both for the authorities whose place it is to create and nurture the circumstances where it will be less of a problem, and for the individuals who are currently in a position they would not have chosen.

In such a set of circumstances, you can hope that the efforts to improve the situation prove successful – which will inevitably take time – or you can take steps yourself to improve your situation. If you are currently unemployed this may mean taking on short term work in another field. Or you can take steps to increase your employment prospects by up-skilling. The latter is something you can even do if you are in a job at the moment, but fear that it may come under threat in the near or immediate future. And if you are seeking to take this step, one potentially very wise option is in the environmental sector. Although the credit crisis is biting in a range of areas, governments are still aware that they have responsibilities to the environment, and are wisely avoiding taking their eye off that ball.

Alternative energy sources and environmentally-friendly manufacturing – among a number of other things – are being looked at closely by governments and businesses. This is partly out of altruism – no-one really wants to have “I destroyed the planet” as their legacy, after all – and partly out of the fact that eventually, renewable energy sources and materials are going to be vital in terms of keeping a business afloat – the scarcer a product becomes, the higher a premium it will have placed on it. This makes f or opportunities in the environmental science sector, as there remains a lot to be discovered in the sector, and indeed a lot of current knowledge to be refined and put into practice.

There is no way of putting this particular genie back in the bottle. Governments and businesses are now tied to legislation that makes environmental issues impossible to ignore. However much it costs up front, it will save in return when the situation is normalized. And for the individual who learns the ropes of environmental compliance, there will be opportunities to turn that knowledge into a secure job, an income stream and something they can really put into practice. It may even allow some of us to set up our own businesses, thus allowing thousands, even millions of us worldwide the chance to draw our own road map to a greener, brighter future. It’s a journey we are all going to have to take – isn’t it better to be in the driving seat?

How To Have An Eco-Friendly  Green Summer

It may seem premature in the second half of April, but making early plans for how you are going to enjoy the summer can really get you in the mood for the evenings getting longer, the days getting warmer and the decrease in rainy days. Taking green issues into account is something that can happen naturally – after all, if you are going to be spending a lot of time outside, then you are less likely to need to use a lot of energy indoors. Heating will be less of an issue, you won’t need to put lights on as early, and in the kitchen the chances are that salads will take the place of soups, so the hob won’t have to be on so much for a start.

But beyond the saving you will make on energy and the dent you can make in your environmental impact, there are other ways that you can prepare for a green summer. These take many forms. Things that you can do to keep the household green, to make your daily lifestyle more environmentally friendly, and ways that you can change the annual summer routine – some of them very subtle – to make things more green-friendly. You’d be surprised where you can make a difference!

There are few people, for example, who do not enjoy a good barbecue in the summer months. It allows you to enjoy simple, grilled food while not having to be cooped up in the kitchen. So often, people serve up dinner and run into the lounge to watch television while they eat. But eating outdoors allows you to make the best of the natural resources that for so much of the year are either absent or ignored. A barbecue can bring with it environmental difficulties, though – the air can get polluted pretty quickly, so you need to look for a green barbecue. One that uses less gas or coal would be ideal.

At that barbecue, you will of course have some guests who would love a cold beverage – as often as not it will be a beer. You can help the environment while enjoying a beer, which is news that will encourage some of the more skeptical enviroskeptics to give some thought to helping out. You can do this by buying organic beer. It does the same job as your typical beer, and goes just as well with grilled food, but producing it impacts the environment a great deal less.

While outside in the sunshine there is of course the danger of succumbing to the lobster factor. Some of us tan beautifully at just the right speed. Others are not so lucky, and can burn up after less than an hour outdoors. For this reason, it is ideal to have a brand of sunscreen which is non-toxic. Additionally the chances are that with all that food and drink around, you will be visited by bugs. Just as with your sunscreen, a more natural brand can be the winner here. It is better for the environment and better for you.

Many people in this day and age do not view the environment as a cause for concern at all. This does not just show itself in climate change skepticism, although that does seem to be the forefront issue that gets the most attention from the doubters. No, the attitude of people who do not view the environment to be an issue – enviroskepticism, for want of a better word – is gaining currency as a response to the growth of the green movement, and what is more, it seems to be gaining popularity in no small part from a tactic of blaming people who have Green concerns for trying to guilt-trip individuals into not enjoying themselves. The theory goes that people with an interest in Green issues have such boring lives themselves that they will do anything to spoil everyone else’s fun.

That, of course, is nonsense. But it is a simple enough message to digest, and gets people off the hook for environmentally unfriendly behaviour, so it is a popular one. Those of us who genuinely care about environmental issues therefore have a tougher job on our hands, faced not only with the problems besetting our environment, but also the twin fronts of apathy and antipathy which face the movement. People who say “oh yeah, I do worry about the environment, but there is so much else to worry about too” are understandable. Those who say “Green issues are unimportant – they are just a front for people who want to stop others doing what they want to” are the truly dangerous ones. Not only is their message destructive and entirely false – it’s also a seductive one for people who do not really want to live responsibly and welcome the chance to make their lack of concern a human rights issue.

The fact of the matter is that with the global economy in the extremely poor shape it is in, the enviroskeptics have the perfect chance to spread their message. Don’t want to positively impact your carbon footprint? Blame the credit crunch for making it too expensive to try. Want to buy a gas-guzzling car? Well, the hybrid fuel cars are more expensive up front, aren’t they? It is not your fault the cheaper cars are the ones that hurt the environment more.

The only way to counter this kind of message is to bring a message that addresses the same concerns, without sinking to the levels often inhabited by enviroskeptics. Yes, hybrid fuel cars are more expensive, but they will pay for themselves over time – you will spend less cash filling your car up with hybrid fuel than if you keep the pure gas one. And you will not have to do it as often because the fuel efficiency of a hybrid car is better. A lot of Green decisions, it is true, cost a little more up front. But in the long run they will save you money, and this is where the Green counter-attack on the enviroskeptic appeals to greed need to be addressed.

I believe it was Kermit the Frog who first said, “It’s Not Easy Being Green”. And he had a point, too, because it seems like hardly a day goes by without new information coming to light about something that we had previously considered to be perfectly acceptable, rendering that thing now completely beyond the pale. Trying to do our best by the planet is a tough job, but it’s also worthwhile. Fighting the good fight and keeping our planet in some sort of condition that we will be happy to hand over to our gran dkids, though far from easy (we hear you, Kermit!), is something that, with a bit of forethought, can be done very efficiently, and can even be a lot of fun.

We will look to bring to light different ways of keeping yourself environmentally sound. Knowing how to harness things that are already freely available and use them in a different way can make you more environmentally friendly. There is also a certain amount of myth busting to be done – where people pay lip service to green issues and swear that they are environmentally aware, they should be made to put their money where their mouth is.


“Green Energy” is a big buzz phrase right now. With car companies looking to plant their flags on green territory by developing hybrid vehicles, and some going as far as to develop fully electric cars, it is dawning on everybody that we are living in changed times, and that the change is not over yet. What are the most environmentally friendly companies? Who are the most environmentally friendly governments? How can we ensure that we are doing everything possible to make the future environmentally sound? These are all things that we will hope to illuminate for you.

As well as all of this, we plan to provide a bit of a different slant on the Green world. How to eat Green, drink Green, travel Green – sure, we will have all of this, but there will also be tips on how to bring a green tinge to every other part of your life while not hurting your pocket and not having any less fun. Green issues may not have caught everybody’s imagination just yet, but as people come to realize that a Green life is compatible with the way they want to live their life, things will come naturally.
